The Wonder of Every Season
Over the past two months, we’ve been rediscovering wonder together. In August, we looked up and were reminded of the greatness of our Creator through the vastness of the heavens. Last month, we looked around and discovered God’s fingerprints throughout His incredible creation. As we conclude this series, I’d like to invite you to take one final step. This month, let’s look beneath the surface and stand in awe of the unseen work of God. Just as creation teaches us that every season has a purpose, our lives remind us that God is often doing His greatest work in places we cannot yet see.
Every season has purpose—even the quiet ones.
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”
—Ecclesiastes 3:1
There is something about October that makes people smile. The mornings are cooler, sweaters find their way back into the closet rotation, and somehow pumpkin spice manages to show up in just about everything. Trees begin putting on a spectacular display of color, and we can’t help but stop and admire their beauty.
But if you look a little closer, another story is unfolding.
The flowers that bloomed all summer begin to fade. The grass slowly turns brown. Leaves drift gently to the ground. Gardens are cleared away, and many animals begin preparing for winter. At first glance, it can feel like life is disappearing.
Yet nothing could be further from the truth.
The most important work isn’t happening above the ground. It’s happening beneath it.
Roots continue to grow deeper. Bulbs quietly store energy for spring. Trees conserve strength for another season of growth. Seeds rest beneath the soil, waiting for just the right time to burst into life once again. While everything appears quiet on the surface, God is faithfully preparing what comes next.
I wonder if our spiritual lives aren’t a lot like that.
We naturally celebrate the seasons when prayers are answered, doors are opening, and growth is easy to see. Those are the spring and summer moments of faith. But what about the quieter seasons? What about the times when progress seems slow, prayers feel unanswered, or we can’t see what God is doing?
It’s tempting to assume that because we can’t see much happening, God must not be working.
Creation tells a different story.
Every autumn reminds us that God does some of His most important work where no one can see it.
Perhaps that’s true in your life right now. Maybe you’re in a season that feels quiet. Maybe you’re faithfully doing the next right thing without seeing much progress. Maybe you’ve been praying for something that hasn’t changed yet. Don’t mistake silence for absence. God has never stopped working.
Just as He faithfully prepares the earth for another spring, He is faithfully preparing you for what comes next. His timing has always been perfect, and His work is often deepest before it becomes visible.
Spring may capture our attention with its blossoms, but autumn teaches us something equally beautiful: we can stand in awe not only of what God is doing that we can see, but also of what He is accomplishing beneath the surface.
Practical Takeaways
Spend a few moments outside this week and notice the quiet changes that autumn brings. Ask God what they might teach you about your own season of life.
Instead of measuring God’s work by what you can see, thank Him for the unseen ways He is strengthening your faith and character.
If you’re in a quiet season, choose one area where you will trust God’s timing instead of demanding immediate results.
Questions to Ponder
What season of life am I in right now?
Where am I tempted to believe God isn’t working simply because I can’t see immediate results?
How might my perspective change if I trusted that God is accomplishing something beneath the surface?
