When Life Catches You Off Guard

Over the next few months, we’ll be walking through a short series focused on principles for handling the unexpected. Life rarely goes according to plan, and most of us can point to moments that took a sharp turn we never saw coming. These devotionals are meant to offer steady, biblical guidance for navigating life’s twists and turns—grounded in Scripture, honest about the struggle, and hopeful about God’s presence in it all.

Trust that God is never caught off guard,
even when you are.

Scripture:
“Declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.’”
—Isaiah 46:10

Most of us like to think we’re fairly adaptable—until life proves otherwise. One unexpected phone call. One change in plans. One situation that didn’t make it onto the calendar. Suddenly, we’re scrambling to regain our footing, wondering how everything unraveled so quickly.

If we’re honest, part of the stress of the unexpected comes from the shock of it all. We didn’t plan for this. We didn’t prepare for this. And yet, here we are. While we’re trying to catch our breath, God is not scrambling. He is not surprised, confused, or worried about how things will turn out.

Scripture reminds us that God declares the end from the beginning. Long before the disruption caught your attention, it was already within His awareness. That doesn’t mean the situation is easy or painless—but it does mean it isn’t random or out of control. What feels sudden to us is never sudden to God.

There’s a quiet comfort in knowing that while we are reacting, God is steady. While we are adjusting, God remains unshaken. And while we may be piecing things together in real time, God is already present in what comes next. Trust grows when we remember that the same God who knew this moment was coming is also the God who promises to walk with us through it.

This truth doesn’t eliminate uncertainty—but it does anchor us. It allows us to loosen our grip on the need to have everything figured out and rest in the confidence that God’s purposes are still unfolding, even when life takes an unexpected turn.

Practical Takeaways

  • When plans change suddenly, pause before reacting and remind yourself: God is not surprised by this.

  • Release the pressure to understand everything immediately—trust often comes before clarity.

  • Look for one small way God might be present in the disruption instead of focusing only on what was lost.

Questions to Ponder

  • What recent situation caught me off guard?

  • How might my response change if I truly believed God already knew this was coming?

  • Where is God inviting me to trust Him instead of trying to regain control?
