One More Day – A Heart of Gratitude for Today

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.
– Psalm 107:1
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
– Psalm 118:24

For the past week, I’ve had the song “One More Day” by Sons of Sunday on repeat. The lyrics have captured my heart in such a beautiful way, focusing on the gratitude we should have for today—no matter what the day holds. It’s a simple reminder that each new day is a gift. I’ve found myself reflecting on the idea that we often overlook the blessing of today because we’re too focused on the past or anxious about the future.

The song has served as a powerful reminder: we have one more day—a day that has never been promised to us, yet here it is. What if, instead of rushing through it, we took a moment to stop and thank God for the simple gift of today?

The Gift of Today
Psalm 118:24 is such a fitting verse for this mindset: “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Notice that the verse doesn’t say “This is the day that I planned or hoped for,” but rather, it’s a day that God has made. Whether the day is full of joy or challenges, whether it’s filled with peace or busyness, it’s still a gift from Him.

A heart of gratitude means choosing to be thankful for the day we have, not the day we expected. It’s easy to get caught up in looking forward to what’s coming or reminiscing about what’s passed, but God’s Word encourages us to focus on today. Each day is a chance to experience God’s grace, to grow in our faith, and to impact the lives around us.

Living with a Grateful Heart
A heart of gratitude isn’t about denying that difficult days come. Life has its ups and downs, and there will be times when we face hardships. But having a heart of gratitude means choosing to find God’s goodness in all things. It’s about appreciating the present moment, even when things feel uncertain. Gratitude shifts our focus from what’s lacking to what’s already given.

I love the simplicity and depth of Psalm 107:1: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Even on our hardest days, we can be thankful because we know that God’s love is unchanging and His goodness is everlasting. No matter what happens today, we can rest in the assurance that He is with us, His love surrounds us, and He has a purpose for our lives.

Practical Ways to Cultivate Gratitude
Here are a few simple ways to cultivate a heart of gratitude in your daily life:

  1. Start Your Day with Thanks: Before you even get out of bed, take a moment to thank God for the gift of today. It can be as simple as saying, “Lord, thank You for this new day. Help me to see Your blessings today.”

  2. Keep a Gratitude Journal: At the end of each day, write down a few things you are grateful for—no matter how small they seem. This helps shift your focus from the negatives to the positives.

  3. Notice the Little Things: Look for God’s presence in the small moments of the day. It could be a quiet morning cup of coffee, a beautiful sunset, or a kind word from a friend. Gratitude isn’t just for the big moments; it’s for the everyday blessings we often overlook.

  4. Thank God in All Circumstances: Even in difficult moments, find something to be grateful for. This doesn’t mean ignoring the hard stuff, but rather choosing to see God’s faithfulness even in the midst of it.

Thought-Provoking Questions:

  1. What would your day look like if you began with an intentional moment of gratitude each morning?

  2. Can you think of a time this week when focusing on gratitude shifted your perspective or your emotions?

  3. How can you carry a heart of gratitude through the more challenging moments of today?

Closing Thought:
Gratitude has the power to change our outlook on life. When we pause to give thanks for each day, no matter how it unfolds, we align our hearts with God’s purpose and open ourselves to experiencing His grace in deeper ways. Today is a gift—let’s not take it for granted.
